Washarr

A washer for a media library you already have. It indexes the files, then transcodes only what you put in the queue.

Private until it is ready. Home-lab use is free. If it makes money, it needs a license.

What it is

Washarr does the job of a library washer, with one difference that matters. A scan fills the index and stops. Seeing a file does not put it in the queue. You search that index and enqueue a file, a show, or a filter onto a named workflow. Workers pull the jobs. The machine running Washarr can be a worker. Another machine can be a worker too, on a CPU or on a GPU.

A workflow is YAML. The one that ships looks at the video first. If it is not already the codec you want, it transcodes. It adds a stereo track from the main English audio and makes that the only default audio. It drops other languages, keeps English subtitles, including the picture-based ones and the SDH track, and turns styled subtitles into plain text. Commentary can be the stereo source when a flow asks for it. A health check is a decode test, separate from that wash, and it stays off until you enqueue it.

You can also ask in a chat, against a model running on your own machine. Find the large files that are still the old codec. Enqueue a show on a flow. The model uses the same search and the same queue as the page. It does not get a shell.

Home-lab use is free. If the install makes money, it needs a license from the people who wrote it. There is no license server and no key to paste in. The repository stays private until it is ready.

First version

  • Add a library by browsing to a folder. A scan indexes the video and does not enqueue unless that library says so.
  • Search by name, codec, size, and language, in one library or several.
  • Enqueue onto a named YAML workflow. The same file and flow will not sit in the queue twice.
  • Workers report how many CPU and GPU jobs they can take. A GPU encode stays on a worker that has a GPU. A worker can be paused, or kept off the queue on a schedule.
  • The queue itself can be off on a schedule, for example on weekdays during the day.
  • Progress, an estimate, and the command while a job runs. A failed probe or health check does not replace the source.
  • A finished wash can stay in an output folder, or be copied beside the original and replace it only after that copy checks out.
  • Dolby Vision profile 7 is skipped, not encoded.
  • The same search and queue tools are available to a local model, in the chat page and over MCP.

After that

  • No license server. The license is the grant, not a check the app phones home for.
  • No canvas for flows. YAML stays the editor.
  • No import of plugins from another washer.
  • Styled subtitles become plain text. Anime typesetting is not in this cut.
  • A Dolby Vision profile 7 encode is not attempted.
